Will they finally find the love that was denied to them?

Blurb:
Freja, rescued from the flesh markets of Silvelea at a young age, has learned firsthand how difficult life is for orphan girls on the planet of Devmaer. Her “rescue” landed her in the harsh world of Matron Cass Warren’s Girls Crib, where young girls are groomed to be sold off as mates to the highest bidder as soon as they reach maturity.

At eighteen Freja was drawn to Déak Ryba, the first man to ever show her kindness. But he didn’t stand a chance against Iwon Sándor’s money and power. Iwon claimed Freja’s hand, condemning her to a miserable life of abuse and neglect.

After three long-suffering years, Freja’s matehood was cut short by his untimely death.

For the first time in her life Freja finds herself free - free to work like a slave to repay the staggering debts Iwon left her. During her final ritual as his widow, a freak accident sweeps her out to sea and remarkably, right back into Déak’s arms.

Can the love that Déak and Freja once shared possibly have survived long years of separation? Will they finally claim the shared life that was denied them? Or will their happiness be stolen again by the sinister forces circling at the edge of their lives?

This novella is a prequel to Bound To The Admiral, book 1 in The Lighthouses of Devmaer series. It introduces the alien world of the planet Devmaer as well as some of the minor characters.

While it is a part of a series, it has a satisfying ending and can be read as a standalone.

Disclaimer: Bound to the Past is a second chance, fantasy-world romance. Along with a happily-ever after ending, it has some very steamy scenes, including elements of power exchange and discipline.

Love is tough. Tough enough to last a long and painful separation.

Excerpt

Déak pushed open the bedroom door and deposited Freja gently on a bed that was bigger than the shack she’d just vacated. It was covered with a rich cotton duvet that matched the green of the padded headboard.

“Unfortunately, there is only one bedroom.” His lips twitched as he sat and leaned over her. Then he kissed her. Forehead. Cheeks. Lips. And lips again. She began to slide, to lose herself in the magic of his touch. She had to get control.

She wriggled away and stood up on the far side of the bed. Lifting her chin and putting her hands on her hips, she surveyed the room like a visiting monarch. “This will do me just fine. But where are you going to sleep?”

In two strides Déak was beside her. A second later she was over his knee and his hand was landing fast and firmly. “Are you going to share the bedroom?” he asked as he swatted her.

“I’ll think about it.” She was laughing so hard she could barely speak.

This was what she wanted. She wanted him to make the decision for her, to show her that he understood her needs. Right now, she needed to be free from any sensation other than the rising and falling of his powerful hand. She loved the gentle spanking that was his way of showing that he understood her needs.
“Are you thinking about it now?”

He’d lifted the thin fabric of her housedress and dragged down her panties. The pace slowed as he allowed each smack to register full force on her tender bottom.

Libby Campbell in her own words:
My romance novels feature strong, self-reliant women and the powerful men who love them. Romantic by nature, I write the stories I want to read: those that feature a spicy power exchange and deliver a sting in the tale.

Canadian by birth, I also lived in Australia for a couple of decades. While living there I overcame my aversion to saucer-sized spiders and, as a condition of marriage to my Aussie Prince Charming, I swore a lifelong allegiance to the Melbourne Football Club.
Then family called and my husband and I packed up and moved. We now live on a rocky island on Canada’s West Coast, close to beaches that once were frequented by smugglers and rumrunners.

My passions are reading and writing. I adore all animals and love hiking, beachcombing, and an occasional night of dancing.

Question and answers with Libby Campbell

Why fantasy?

I wanted to create a new world, in some ways a gentler one. I read lots of fantasy and decided to seek adventure in lands of my own making.

In some ways it’s really freeing to be in a world where I make the rules. But then I have to remember them all! So the freedom is curtailed by the demands of continuity.

What was your inspiration for Bound to the Past?

I wrote this book as a gift to readers. I wanted to invite them into the alien world of Devmaer, to meet some of the wonderful characters who live there.

Of course, the ocean is involved. One of favorite almost-daily things to do is walk the rocky beaches near my home. It was on one of those walks that this story started to take shape.

What happens both below and above the waves interests me. This is the first time in any of my books that any of the action is underwater.

What was Freja’s last name before she was mated with Iwon?

No one knows her birth name. All the girls in the Crib are given Matron’s name, Warren. So her name in the citizen register would be Freja Warren. I picked Matron’s surname because one of our local theater companies was staging Mrs. Warren’s Profession when I was writing this.

We’ll see more of Freja’s homeland, and learn a bit more about her family in Silvelea with book 3.

Déak and Freja get together again after four years and are still in love. Is a four-year separation with a loving reunion more fantasy?

Ha. No. Not at all. I’ve read a lot of personal stories about this type of thing.

And I have firsthand experience:

My husband and I met scuba diving on a beach in Vancouver. A short, steamy affair followed. He went back to Australia and we tried to forget each other, not writing or phoning for years. Major fail. Five years later we met again in Melbourne. Six months after that I moved across the world and didn’t look back.

When love is right, it’s right. People gave us six months but here we are, many years later, living our HEA.

  1. Thanks lovely Kryssie
Book 2 in nearing completion and I have it on reliable authority (my husband) that it's more exciting than the prequel or book 1. I'm sure he is completely objective too. :-)
