Come and meet Jem. #EggcerptExchange

Author Michelle Abbott writes new adult romance. She currently has four books published.

Interview with Jem

1.  Job?
I work at an amusement arcade, fixing the machines when they go wrong, handing out change and that kind of thing. It pays my bills, it’s local and the hours suit me.

2. Currently residing in...?
Hemsby in Norfolk. I’ve got a trailer right by the sea. There’s nothing like walking along the beach every morning. It keeps me calm.

3. Level of schooling, or self-taught?
I had to quit school when I was small because my asshole of a father moved us all at the last minute after someone reported him to social services for child cruelty. He never enrolled me in another school. I taught myself all I need to know.

4. Favorite food?
Don’t have one. I eat to live, I don’t live to eat.

5. Most important goal?

To get Devon to remember me and love me again. To take care of her and show her that I never forgot her and never stopped loving her.

JEM
Two injured, stubborn souls meet unexpectedly. Will they save each other from their demons or have they been too damaged for too long to see past the pain?

Growing up, all Jem knew was hatred and the pain from his father's fists. Taunted by the kids at school, he was alone, until a girl with carrot coloured hair sat next to him.

She smiled.
She listened.
She cared.

She was his angel, and he knew he’d love her forever. But Jem’s father hurts him in a way he never expected by taking him away from her.

Now eighteen, scarred inside and out, Jem trusts no one and has worked hard to ensure he'll never be helpless again. But then he runs into his angel. The only problem is she doesn’t recognize him. Jem needs her to remember him, to show him that their time together meant to her what it did to him. For once in his life he wants to have mattered to someone, to her.

Devon is attracted to the muscular, tattooed, pierced hottie standing by the pub quiz machine. That is, until he punches a guy clean across the bar for daring to touch him. She’s had her fill of violent men and intends to avoid this one at all costs.
Excerpt from JEM
Jem

I stomp along the beach. “She don’t remember me. She doesn’t even know who I am.” I kick my foot through the sand. “I recognized her right away.” I unclench my fists, pick up a stone and hurl it into the sea. “I mean what the hell.” I stare down at Rex. “All that shit she said about being my best friend. She didn’t mean any of it. I haven’t even crossed her mind. She hasn’t got a clue who I am.” Rex looks up at me, his tail between his legs. “Well say something.”

“He’s a dog, Jem. Dogs can’t talk.”

I start; I didn’t realize Maddy was here. She’s holding a mug. “I made some coffee. Do you want one?”

She’s dressed in black sweatpants and a long, baggy, black t-shirt. I glare at her. “Where you off to? A funeral?”

She arches her eyebrow. “Yeah, yours if you don’t calm down. What’s wrong?”

I snap my fingers for Rex to follow as I head off towards our trailer. “Nothing,” I call over my shoulder. “I’m over it already.”

She follows behind me. “Yeah, sounds like it. So do you want a coffee?”

“Nah. I’m going for a work-out.”

I take Rex back to his owner and then I head to the children’s playground on the trailer site and am glad to find it empty. I rub my hands down the legs of my sweatpants and then reach up to grab hold of the monkey bars. I begin my pull ups. I can feel the tension in my muscles as I pull myself up for the thirtieth time. What is Devon doing here? I grunt as I go for number thirty-one. She can’t have been here long; I would have seen her before now if she had. I let go of the bar and rub my hand over my biceps. I pull myself up one more time, hook my legs over the bar and begin my stomach exercises. She must be here on vacation. I try to focus on my work-out but all I can see is her face. Damn she looked beautiful. She still has that mane of red hair. “Argh.” I hook my hands behind my head and work myself until my stomach muscles burn. It doesn’t help. I get down from the bars and wipe the sweat out of my eyes.

Back in my trailer I pour myself some coffee, dump thee spoonfuls of sugar into my mug and stir. I glance around. “This place looks like a bomb has hit it.” Maddy’s bed sheet is crumpled and her duvet is half on the bed and half on the floor. “You’re such a slob.”

“Sheesh. You got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning.” She places some slices of bread under the grill. “I’ve just woken up. We don’t all make our beds like we’ve been in the army. Neat freak.”

I pick up my mug and sit down at the table. “I’m not a freak. I never had much when I was growing up, so I look after my stuff.” I take a sip of my coffee.

“Do you want some toast?” Maddy butters the toast without waiting for my reply.

“Yeah, I guess.”

She holds up a jar. “Do you want strawberry jam?”

“Yeah, whatever.”

She’s about to dip the knife into the jam jar. “Hey, don’t do that.” I get up and slide the jar away from her. “Clean the knife first. You’ll get butter in the jam.”

She reaches for the jar. “It’s my jam. I bought it.” She stares at me, grins and then repeatedly jabs the buttered knife into the jam. “And I can do what I want with it, Mr I’m So Not Over It Already.”

Ah hell. It’s not her fault; I shouldn’t take it out on her. I snatch up a slice of toast. “I’ll pass on the jam.” I reach across and mess up her hair. “Thanks Imp. I’m gonna get ready for work.”

I shove the toast in my mouth and head for the shower. I turn up the heat and step under the spray. I squeeze shower gel into my palm and rub briskly over my skin. I can feel the scars that are hidden beneath my tatts. Scars from a life I want to forget. I wish I could forget her as easily as she’s forgotten me. I turn the heat up and rest my forehead against the tiles as the scalding water runs down my back. Dammit. I pound my fist against the wall. I didn’t matter to her. I don’t want to think about her. I shut off the water, grab a towel and rub it over my hair and body. I pull on my jeans and my white tee and head back into the kitchen to grab another coffee.

Michelle Abbott lives in the UK and hates describing herself in 3rd person.

She  loves to write new adult romance about heroes who begin as the underdog and are protective of their girl.
She's an avid reader of romance, is addicted to coffee and loves wine and chocolate, so yeah, not the most healthy eating and drinking habits :-) She spends way too much time online when she should be writing. She collects teddy bears and occasionally knits a couple of rows on a sweater she started years ago, which she may eventually finish in time to wear for her funeral :-)
