My snippet is from Desire, Deceit, and the Doctor.
Parking behind the hall, Adam hunted through the glove box for the keys. “I haven’t been back since high school. I knew this girl, you see, with emerald eyes and hair that blazed like a bonfire. I loved her so much it scared me, so I stayed away.” His voice dropped so low Mandy struggled to hear. “I still love you, but I messed up big time. I’d give anything for a chance to win you back.”
Mandy couldn’t breathe, couldn’t speak, so she stood in the cold night air and stared at the stars. Dare I believe him? Finally she managed to whisper, “Maybe, but while I trust you with my life, I’m not sure I trust you with my emotions.”
He grimaced as if her words cut into his soul, but too much had happened for her to walk straight back into his arms. He dropped a gentle kiss on her forehead. “Give it time.”
Once inside the stone porch, he fumbled for the right key. A brilliant light made him look over his shoulder. A second or two later an explosion sounded, so loud it made the hall’s windows rattle. Silence fell, then the opposite cliff lit up in a sheet of flame.
Adam crowded Mandy and Ben against the porch’s stone walls. Looking over his shoulder, he grimaced. The funeral pyre of Devlin’s Hotel lit on the opposite cliff like a beacon. Adam gave them a sheepish grin. “Sorry. The noise carried me back to the field hospital where I patched up the wounded. Sometimes we came under attack. God, Mandy, this doesn’t look good.”
She peered around him, staring at the tower of flame destroying her home. Devlin’s Hotel looked like a medieval ruin silhouetted by the flames. As she watched, the walls collapsed, and the crash of the roof falling in echoed around the bay. Even from this distance, she heard the rocks shaken loose by the explosion tumble into the sea. Too stunned to speak, she trembled as her home, her livelihood, and her future burned.
