A Hell Of Cure For Hysteria #regency #research #romance #suspense #weird #science #research e

Does her husband want Alethea dead?

I love the weird things my research throws up, and this makes me smile. Regency society was male dominated and women were supposed to lie back and think of England. Sex was purely for a man’s pleasure. Imagine the poor lady stuck with a heavy handed jerk who took his delight and left her needy.

While no one would admit to an unfilled sex-drive, it was perfectly respectable to have hysterics or go into a decline. So what’s a lusty woman to do? Well…us women are sneaky.

To quote Wikipedia
In Western medicine hysteria was considered both common and chronic among women. Even though it was categorized as a disease, hysteria's symptoms were synonymous with normal functioning female sexuality.[1] Women considered to have it exhibited a wide array of symptoms, including faintness, nervousness, sexual desireinsomnia, fluid retention, heaviness in the abdomen, shortness of breath, irritability, loss of appetite for food or sex, and a "tendency to cause trouble".[1]

Doctors recommended various curse, horse-back riding among them. Maybe the poor, frustrated women should have been masturbating, but that was considered self-abuse. After putting their heads together, doctors decided women incapable of sexual feelings.

The most reliable cure is startling, but was socially acceptable. Doctors or midwives coated their fingers in vegetable oil then sank them inside the stricken female. Simultaneously, they pressed the heel of their hand down on a woman’s clit.

Once the woman orgasmed—or had a paroxysmthey were cured of their malaise. Imagine a doctor making house calls and getting paid to bring his patient off. So popular was this cure that doctors bought dildoes to use on their patients and save their aching fingers.

Unbelievable – but true.

Publisher’s Blurb

Going about her mundane life in a small fishing village, Alethea never dreamed she would end up with a man like the Earl of Deanswood, yet when she caught the handsome gentleman's eye he wasted no time in making her his wife. Unbeknownst to Alethea, however, her conniving mother has convinced Deanswood that she has no interest in the marital bed. Devastated by his seeming disinterest, Alethea searches for someone to instruct her in the ways of enticing a man.

When a friend informs Deanswood of Alethea's plans, he decides to train his new bride himself. Soon enough, Alethea finds herself naked, blindfolded, and helplessly bound as she is thoroughly spanked and then brought to one blushing, quivering climax after another. But when Alethea's life is threatened by her mother's vicious scheming, can Deanswood protect his innocent bride?

Publisher's Note:
His Innocent Bride is a stand-alone novel which shares the Regency-era setting of Wickedly Used. It includes spankings and sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don't buy this book.
