WHAT’S IN A KISS?

It turns out there may be more to kissing than just physical contact. Kisses may actually help us choose a partner and cement a lasting relationship.
According to an article in Science Daily, researchers at Oxford University, Rafael Wlodarski, and Professor Robin Dunbar, state there are three theories kissing plays in relationships.
1. It somehow helps assess genetic quality of a potential mate.
Through saliva, scientists speculate, kisses help us acquire a range of information, including hormone levels, and genetic compatibility. During a lip-lock, chemical reactions in the brain and body are activated. (Psychology Today)
2. It is used to create arousal that leads to sex. And that may very well be true.
In my novel, Laid Out and Candle Lit, when Tizzy says to her soon-to-be husband, Ridge, “Kiss me like you mean it.”  He replies, “No. Hell no. That kiss gets me in trouble. That kiss is uptown shopping for downtown business, and I’ve done all the business with you I can right now.”
3. It is useful in keeping relationships together.
Wlodarski and Dunbar conducted an online survey of 900 adults about the importance of kissing. The survey showed women rated kissing more important in relationships than men.
That may also be true because I read somewhere that a woman will not go forward with a relationship if the man is a bad kisser. I get it. I kissed a guy once who had limp lips, and the thought of kissing him again caused my chest to ache, and not in a good way. One date and it was over!

Five Interesting Facts about Kissing:

1. When you kiss your heart beats faster and more oxygen reaches your brain
2. A first kiss causes a spike in dopamine, making you crave more. (If it’s a good one)
3. Lips have a disproportionate number of nerves compared to other parts of the body.
4. One kiss burns 3 calories.
5. The world record for the longest kiss lasted 58 hours, 35 minutes, and 58 seconds!
Again, according to Psychology Today, regardless of why we kiss, it’s thought that once a partner has been selected, kissing serves to maintain and strengthen the bond. So pucker up and smooch all you like. It’s good for you and your love life!!
