Crackle, fizz, bang. More gunshots. Smoke drifting out of a cave. Hand grenades! Kathryn started. Luke grabbed her and wrapped his arms and legs around her, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe. Rolling them into the shelter of the rocks, he snapped out an order, military style. “Stay down and stay hidden. I’m going to take the shooters out.”
When he loosened his hold, she wrapped her arms around his neck. “Luke, it’s all right. It’s only some idiot kids with firecrackers.”
Lost in his nightmare, he didn’t seem to comprehend her words, just unhooked her arms and rose into a crouch.
Desperate to stop him hurting someone, Kathryn yelled, “You in the cave! Come out with your hands up, or you’re going to have an army soldier beating on your asses. Get out here! Now.”
Ben and Pete sidled out the cage, sheepish grins on their faces. Both boys blanched when they saw the scars running like a red spiderweb from the left of Luke’s forehead, down his neck and torso before decorating his left leg with ribbons of pain. Luke dropped back over Kathryn, determined to protect her in case other insurgents lurked nearby.
Ben glanced across at Pete. “Dad’s gonna kill me. On the count of three, let’s grab the bikes and get out of here. One, two, three.”
The boys made a wild dash for their bikes, mounted up, and pedaled like crazy over the beach.
Luke bellowed an Afghan curse, leaped to his feet, and raced after them.
Thankfully, they have bikes and a head start.

This time his flashback didn’t scare her, but he needed someone to hold on to when the going got tough, and she needed that someone to be her.

  1. An intriguing backstory for the hero, and a final line that really gives insight into a sympathetic - or maybe lovestruck? :) - heroine. Great excerpt.
